"Lost" Tigers Found in Bhutan

Recently there was an inspiring BCC

programme(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ty69k) documenting the existence of a group of Bengal tigers living deep in the Himalayas in the Kingdom of Bhutan when it was previously believed that they could not survive at such a high altitude even more surprising is the fact that they are co-existing with snow leopards and leopards in the same valley. If you didn't see it I absolutely recommend that you try to catch it on BBC iPlayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ty69k/episodes/player) as for one thing it is an amazing programme, and secondly it is just so uplifting to get good news about the survival of wildlife for a change! The exact location is being protected for obvious reasons and it is hoped that the area can be conserved and linked up with other national parks to provide corridors of protected habitat to encourage breeding and extension of territory to places where tigers are currently struggling to survive. Currently in the whole of India it is estimated that there are only approximately 1000 Bengal tigers (the national animal of India) surviving and this figure is contested by many groups and may be much lower so any way of helping tigers to naturally return to the beautiful National Parks in North East India (and hopefully even further south and West) would be amazing.

If you feel inspired to see tigers in the wild for yourself and, by doing so, help their very survival*, now is an excellent time to visit. The climate in Central and Northern India is wonderful between October and March and there is every chance that you will be lucky enough to see tigers in one or several of the wildlife sanctuaries that you visit, depending on your itinerary. In many Parks it is possible to go on elephant safari, which is exciting in itself, but as tigers are very relaxed and act completely naturally around elephants, there is the opportunity to get within a few yards of these magnificent animals (chances for great photographs and unforgettable memories) and I can guarantee that this is one of the most magical experiences it is possible to have - definitely on the list of the things you should do before you die! Of course India offers even more than amazing wildlife; it is full of history and spirituality, with many different cultures and cuisines to sample along with beautiful palaces and forts to explore including one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal so usually wildlife packages to India are combined with culture tours and/or adventure holidays (trekking, white water rafting, paragliding and mountaineering to name but a few of the possibilities in the Indian subcontinent).

Local people then begin to value the wildlife rather than viewing it as a threat to their livelihood. They are then much more likely to protect the local habitat and help the fight against poaching - the main causes for so many wildlife species in India facing total extinction.
