The National Association of Realtors (NAR) announced the extension of its highly successful housing campaign dubbed "Operation Home Relief. The program aims to provide counseling and aid to families in the military who in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure.
While the campaign was launched by NAR, using the social networking site Facebook, only in October it has matched donations totaling $20,000. For this campaign, the NAR has joined up with USA Cares, an organization that provides assistance to post-9/11 servicemen and veterans as well as military personnel in active duty facing foreclosure.
Operation Home Relief also works with HouseLogic.com, a consumer website on homeowners and homeownership. With the same mission as USA cares, this tie up also aims to provide assistance to the same group by enhancing awareness, gathering support and obtaining funding for families facing foreclosure.
Ron Phipps, NAR President, said that the organization believes that foreclosures do not only affect families who lose their properties, but entire neighborhoods and communities. Phipps expressed gratitude for the support that the campaign received and pledged that the organization will funnel more funding to help military families needing housing assistance.
An NAR report studied the common financial difficulties that servicemen usually run into with the following results:
Reservists called to active duty earn far less in the service than in their civilian work.
When reservists get called to duty, their spouses are forced to lessen their working hours to tend to the children.
Returning reservists often find they have no civilian jobs to go back to.
Returning reservists sustain injuries while on duty and are unable to resume their work in their civilian job. The assistance they obtain due to their disability is never enough to raise their families plus their spouses would also have to cut back on work hours to manage their rehabilitation.
Reservists called to service are unable to build their equity as their homes lose value. Any attempts they make at refinancing can be very challenging.
Operation Home relief donates a dollar for every new join until the goal is reached.
