Bath Tub Refinishing, Resurfacing and Re-glazing all means to apply a coating over the top of your existing bath tub to change color and give it back that ease of cleaning and shine. Bath tubs wear out. Bath tubs are manufactured from enamel-steel (from the 1950's to present day)porcelain-cast iron tub, these are prior 1940's to the 1800's. These are the heavy tubs, they do make them still but they are expensive. The Acrylic-fiberglass bath tubs also known as soaker tubs are the molded bath tubs that are found more commonly ini modern homes. They are also the 'Jacuzzi' kind of tubs. Another bath tub that should be mentioned in Plastic bath tubs, I'm not a big supporter of these, it seems that builders use them but they loose shine and I would consider them to be the cheapeast of all bath tubs.

Now if you have one of these bathtubs and it is worn out, scraches on the bottom, black showing on the tops where people put the soap like on the enamel tubs-that's where the soap has eaten away the enamel and the black is the metal showing. The porcelain tubs may be pitted and showing dark colours on the bottom which is the cast iron showing though as well. Acrylic bath tubs are the softest bath tub, easier to scratch and harsh cleansers and cleaning pads will in effect fine sand away the top layer of acrylic making the bath tub harder and harder to clean and look good.

The good news is that all these bath tubs though different methods of preparation can be refinished. The bad news is that this is NOT a job for the home owner. I have been in the resurfacing business some 11 years and have seen refinishing attempted by the home owner, brush strokes, runs in the paint, using the wrong type of paint result in costing more to strip it off than the cost of doing the job in the first place. Don't do it. Call a Professional. The cost considering the cost of travel, time and product and the fact that hopefully this Professional bath tub refinisher has done this job hundreds of times is well worth the money. The cost to do bath tub resurfacing is usually under $500 if the bathtub has been refinished before. If you have an original harvest Gold, green or pink bath tub, this can be done for under $400. Of course price may vary according to location and competitiion but in any case is a lot less than replacement. Bath Remodeling involves ripping out the bath tub, the tile usually has to go and maybe the floor, drywall, costing thousand for all.

Bath tub resurfacing is done by preparation of the surface either by acid etch or sanding the bath tub. Some Companies do not etch using other chemicals, I have not seen one that works better than etching myself. After thoughly cleaning the bath tub, masking it off a professional will use an HVLP gun that gets the specialized product on the bathtub. This is the same type of gun that is used in automotive paint. A fan should be used to take away the over spray and keep the smell's down to a minimum. I find that three coats of primer and three coats of topcoats is best, an optional clear coat like found on cars give the best shine and protects the color against scratching and discolouration.

This whole process of refinishing takes some 4 hours, the bath tub can be used the next day. What's more is that resurfacing can be done for the Bath Tiles and Surrounds, showers surrounds , shower floors, and sinks, Cultured marble sinks can be done in solid speckled colors.
