IT'S not just supermarkets and car dealerships that are taking advantage of the British shopper. The fashion houses are pulling the cashmere over our eyes as well. Prices for many items of clothing and accessories are vastly inflated compared to those paid by Americans and Europeans.
Italy in particular is said to be a cheaper place to shop - even allowing for the cost of a flight.
So Femail sent JULIA CARLING to Milan to see just how much she could save on her spring wardrobe.
TOUGH commission it was, but, being a dedicated professional, I accepted Femail's challenge to spend the weekend shopping in Milan.
Cheap flights, good-value hotels and the beneficial exchange rate have all helped to make this a fun, and economical, option for those who love high fashion but don't want to pay extortionate British prices.
In Milan, there is a golden square of designer shops, all within walking distance.
Here you'll find the shopaholic's dream with Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace, plus the bonus of the odd dishy Italian and a tasty bowl of pasta.
I also bought a divine bottle of Corso Como's own-brand perfume which, at GBP 46/100ml, was GBP 7 cheaper than at Liberty's in London's Regent Street.
Accessories, it seems, are the thing to look out for this season and there are serious savings to be made in Milan. Checking out the handbags at Gucci, I was amazed at the prices. The PR girls in London have tried to convince me there is no difference in cost and stock, but I have to disagree. A girlfriend had asked me to buy a bag for her because the London shops had sold out - a classic Gucci bag which cost GBP 300. I bought it in Milan for GBP 230. That saving alone would pay the air fare to Milan.
Next, I headed to Piazza San Bibila, where there is an open shopping arcade with a slightly younger, cheaper vibe.
I popped into Benetton where T-shirts and sweaters were GBP 5 to GBP 10 cheaper than in the UK. Then, into Fiorucci, which was packed with shoppers after tight bottes neige, tiny hot pants and little trinkets.
Emporio Armani and Armani Junior, on Via Durini, were where I found the best prices of all, with suits for at least GBP 100 less, and lots of choice. I went for a smart but casual pair of trousers with a pull-in waist for GBP 87 with a little woollen top for GBP 53. A combined saving of GBP 89.
By now, I was weighed down by bags and in need for a cocktail so I called it a day. Milan had proved a great city to shop in: no waiting lists, no stern security men on doors and lots of big savings.
One word of warning, though: at Malpensa airport, I found more goodies from Fendi, Etro, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo and a fabulous little Gucci store.
