Copyright (c) 2010 Stephen LauBreast cancer is the most common cause of death in women. In a most recent cancer study, researchers announced that cancer costs the global economy nearly $900 billion a year—more than any other cause of death. The study also said that breast cancer is among the costliest forms of the disease, particularly in high-income countries, such as the United States. There may be many causes of breast cancer, one of which is a link to having too much estrogen (female hormone manufactured by the ovaries in women and in small amounts by the testicles in men) in the body. During menstruation, as well as in the latter part of each menstrual cycle, women often experience high estrogen levels. Increased estrogen may over stimulate cell growth in the breast as much as four times, and any excess of estrogen may increase the risk of cancer by stimulating cell growth in the breasts, ovaries and uterus in women. Cells dividing too rapidly may pose a risk of a genetic accident, resulting in alteration in the genetic structure of cells in the breast.Accordingly, reducing estrogen may reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer. The question is: How to reduce the...more

Breast cancer results from uncontrolled growth of breast cells resulting in a malignant tumor. Scientists have been trying to get a cure for the disease for many years. A lot of progress has been made since they begun, although no cure has yet been found. The earliest records of the disease date back to as early as the Egyptian civilization. They recorded the lumps as tumors or ulcers in the breasts. They also concluded that there was no known cure and that treatment was not effective. Treatment was done through cauterization. This treatment involved the burning of the diseased body part. It was done in order to remove the undesired growths. However, in the seventeenth century, surgeons discovered the link between breast cancer and lymph nodes in the armpits. They then began to do surgical procedures in order to remove the lymph nodes, breast tissue and chest muscle. This procedure was first performed by a French surgeon, Jean Louis Petit in the late sixteen hundred and early seventeen hundred. Another surgeon, Benjamin Bell of Scottish descent continued with his work and performed these procedures until 1806. From around 1882, surgeons progressed to doing...more
