'brush Up' On Your Daily Brushing Routine

Brushing your teeth seems like a pretty basic thing

, right? You go through the motions every morning before you leave for work and each evening before you jump into bed. That's all it takes for a clean and healthy smile, right?

Wrong. Too many of us assume that brushing for a grand total of three minutes each day is enough to fend off gum disease, cavities, and other oral diseases when, in fact, it takes much more effort. And then we are somehow shocked when we finally visit the dentist and receive bad news.

So let me help you "brush up" on a better routine so that you can be more confident the next time you step into the dentist's office.

First off, proper brushing begins with the proper toothbrush. The majority of experts recommend that you use a soft-bristled brush so that you don't damage your gums. But even with softer bristles, you can still scrub too hard, causing your gums to retreat, leaving your teeth sensitive and vulnerable.

That is why it may be beneficial to switch to an electric toothbrush. They are designed to help keep you from applying too much pressure. Whether you stick to a manual or upgrade to an electric, you need a toothbrush with a small head so that you can more easily maneuver it to clean your back teeth.

When you brush, do so with circular motions or place your brush at a forty-five degree angle and sweep upward when brushing the bottom or downward for the top. Don't forget to brush your tongue, as bacteria and food particles can amass there as well, causing bad breath and other undesirable issues. Take the time to do a thorough job, even if you are tired or running late.

Use mouthwash--a fluoride rinse, alcohol-based, or hydrogen peroxide wash will do the trick, depending on what you are going for. They are all meant to kill germs and strengthen teeth. You do not need to compound these products, but talk to your dentist if you have different goals in mind (for example, whitening and strengthening enamel).

Do NOT use mouthwash as a substitute for flossing. Mouthwash cannot banish all of the food particles that will lurk between your teeth and wreak havoc. When you floss, do so gently, as you don't want to make your gums bleed from too much pressure. If they do begin to bleed, you may have a gum disease. It's time to contact your dentist.

The overall condition of your mouth is very important. After all, who doesn't melt when they see a dazzling smile? So stop giving your teeth the brush off, and brush up on your routine!
