The green route looks a promising way to fight cancer

The green route looks a promising way to fight cancer Their cancer-fighting properties are understood to come from a phytochemical type contained in them, known as isothiocyanates. These are believed to be especially good at breaking down carcinogens, or cancer-causing substances, in our bodies. Recent studies have found that these isothiocyanates, when released into the body, can pinpoint the mutant genes present in our bodies,...more

Vitamin B deficiency can increase the risk of bowel cancer

Vitamin B deficiency can increase the risk of bowel cancer According to research from Cornell University in New York, studies carried out on nutrition and genetics in mice can help us to gain a greater understanding of how bowel cancers develop. This can be done by identifying a gene that increases the risk of bowel cancer in mice when the animals' diets are deficient in folate. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food. The study, which is published in the March issue of Cancer Research journal, provides evidence that a combination of both folate deficiency and reduced expression of the SHMT1 gene, which is required for DNA synthesis, increases the risk of bowel cancer in laboratory mice.  The SHMT1 gene may be a factor in itself; however dietary folate can interact with an individual's genetic make up to increase the risk of bowel cancer. Professor Patrick Stover, Division of Nutritional Sciences and the senior author of the paper states that "Nutrition and genetics work together to contribute to the creation of cancer cells and, based on the similarity of folate metabolism in mice and humans, it is likely that this gene is associated with...more

Living after Treatment for Cancer

Living after Treatment for Cancer Cancer sucks. When I was 4 years old, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. The experts said she had less than a year. I remember being on the street, crying, on the roof of my dad's car, screaming 'MOM!!!!!' to the hospital, while she waived at us from a window way up.My mom had 6 sisters, 3 died of cancer. She also had 7 brothers. One of them died of cancer. She's been to more operations and treatments than anyone I know. Her breasts were amputated, as well as her ovaries and uterus. She also had something about her colon and one simple cosmetic thing on her face. (The latter had beauty purposes)Right now, as I write this, I'm 22 and very happy to announce that my mom is still alive and kicking. Awesome isn't?Here's what she says to me all the time:'I didn't care what the doctors said...I had to see you grow up'.You'd be surprised if you saw her. For her age, she has a nice figure. She kicks ass in skiing and is very energetic, all the time. Since my mom is a walking monument of survival, I decided to ask her what her views on cancer are and how she managed to survive and maintain a smile all these years. When I asked her about her...more
