INTRODUCTION:

Rivalry is a state in which two people, groups, companies, professions etc are competing for the same thing: a fierce rivalry for word supremacy. (Sally, 2008) .It can also be viewed as an attempt to be equal or surpass another in a particular thing.

Rivalries in nursing:

This is a battle of who is superior to the other, a collaboratory

syndrome in- between nurses of same specialties, different

specialties and other Health professionals. This problem has

generated a lot of Headaches, noise, disharmony and non

therapeutic environment for patient recovery. Infact, most of

the time it degenerated to physical combat in-between them or

with other Health team. This altitude is painting the profession

red before the society.

According to Roberts (2005) all professions will

experience a predicament or event that reflect poorly on their

competence, character or commitment at some point in time,

due to mistakes they have made in the past that have become

public knowledge or competency gap. Professions that

developed competency gap and fail to re-build it stand the

chance of loosing their respect.

Customer Satisfaction Tract(2006) was of the opinion that in

today's competitive global market place, success is defined by

how satisfied customers feel about all aspect of their

relationship with service establishment. When a customer, for

example, a health care consumer, who receives the goods and

services of a Nurse, fails to return for the same in time of need,

there is indication of non-satisfaction with the previous

services.

The aim of every producers is to maintain the consumers of his

goods and services, this deem it feet for Nursing profession to

wage war against collaboratory syndrome in Nursing

profession, to maintain her uniqueness.

Nursing is viewed as a profession with different specialties, which assist individual families or communities to effectively meet their self care deficits .Nurses give quality Care: offering the greatest health benefits with the least health risk to the greatest number of people within the available resources. The practice is purely altruistic in Nature; it is a calling, beyond a career.

These attributes make nursing a unique profession, in delivering of quality care. The provision of health services to the ever increasing population of Nigeria in particular and World as a whole has made it mandatory for the Nursing profession to be divided into different specialties. Basically, it is divided into three areas: Administration, Education and clinical Nurses. These are further divided into sub- areas: E.g. Clinical is divided into the following: Anesthetists Nurse, orthopaedic Nurse, midwife, public health Nurse, General Nurses etc.

The essence of this decision is to meet the individual needs of the patient and to achieve the goal of making health services available, affordable, accessible and acceptable to the populace/ masses.

It beats ones imagination that in most health organizations, the issues of different specialties had caused a lot of disharmony and unstable working environment which most of the time degenerated to physical combat among Nurses.

The battle of who is superior to the other. This would have been better fought in the training institutions (schools) but, the tutor or lecturers too are also faced with the problem of staff rivalries.

Now that nobody is left out, whose responsibility shall it be to perform this Herculean task of solving the problem of staff rivalry among Nurses in different specialties and Nurses and other healthy professionals?

Moreover, be that as it may, the profession can not shirk from their responsibilities, they must contrast in their kids early enough to do what is morally right and that which is opprobrious.

The profession does not need to despair or abandon the goal behind different Nursing specialties because of the current hardship faced. It must be remembered; that one good seed sown today will bear whole lot of fruit tomorrow.

Therefore, the profession is expected to put up an ethical code that will help the Nurses to sustain co-operative relationship with co-workers in Nursing and with other Health team. Likewise, to be able to help Nurses in taking appropriate action to safeguard them whenever their action is endangered by way of team work or exchange of ideas.

Here, we are not saying that nursing profession is independent of other Health profession. Infact, under dependent function of a Nurse, a Nurse is under obligation to carry out doctor's order, unless he/ she believes that the order is in error or would be detrimental to the patient, because a Nurse who carries out an inaccurate order may be legally responsible for any harm suffered by the patient.

A case where a physician gave an order that is against the body of knowledge of a Nurse and the doctor refuses to change because of his ego neglecting the queries issues by the Nurse.

This situation most of the time degenerated to rivalry between the Nurses and the doctors. Because, some doctor believed that, they are the head of the ward, which is not true! Every profession, including nursing, performing services needed by the societies. It means, every profession is important on their own. The Nursing profession consult it's own body of knowledge, part of which is specialized and unique to Nursing and part of which is held in common with other Health professions such as medicine, pharmacy, medical lab etc .It is this specialized body of knowledge, that set Nursing profession on higher pedestal than any other professions. It also establishes the direction and the limitation of their practice. Likewise, the specialized knowledge, within the limit of the law, is the basis for independent decisions made by Nurses in the care of patients. Given the particular social services they rendered, nurses have developed a large body of expertise, for example, in counseling, feeding, bed bathing etc. Theses enable them to make decision in those areas independent of other Health care providers. This specialized Nursing knowledge defines not only nursing practice but it is professional identity for Nurses.

Now, we can see that each profession has a body of knowledge which they base their practice upon i.e. their professional value or professional ethics.

What is professional ethics? These are usually describing in codes that establish by members of a professional group e.g. Nursing ethics, medical ethics etc which set a standard for its members. Member are under the obligation to follow the laid down rules, otherwise, there could be sanctions. By this means, they monitor the activities and conducts of their members.

A professional ethics code is a collective statement about the groups' expectations goal and standards. An ethical code for nurses acts as a reminder of the responsibilities of one who belong to the professional group that care for the sick.

Now, that we have established the fact that, each professional bodies have their own ethical code. It means, their could be a possibility of having an ethical conflict which can generate rivalry in- between them.

Therefore, it is very difficult to codify all the principles to which one must adhere to in order to resolve dilemma or rivalries in the field of practice.

As strange as it may seem, it is possible to resolve the problem. Infact, we must remove the word impossibility from our vocabulary, as David Ben-Gurion once observed in another context, "Anyone who doesn't believe in possibilities is not a realist''

In view of this, this write up is providing or recommending steps in resolving the problem and how to prevent rivalries in nursing profession.

STEPS INRESOLVING RIVALRIES ORCOLLABORATORY SYDROME.

STEP I:Recognize the cause of a problem: recognizing a problem make it easy for solution, hence, the ethical and moral issues involved we being appraised.

STEP II: Gather additional data about the situation examine the patient's medical and social situations. Who are the people involved the policies of the health facility and the legal implications.

STEP III: Clarify the personal context of the ethical dilemma, to clarify the real ethical issues; a nurse has to be aware of her own responses, using standards clarified within a code of ethics.

STEP IV: Identify various options and weigh each line of action and the consequences it will have on the patient, nurse, the hospital and the society.

STEP V: Once the nurse has a clear perception of the ethical dilemma she should construct and evaluate arguments for and arguments for and against each position involved. Weighing both side of the dilemma responsible for the rivalries. This helps the nurse to determine whether reasons for a position taken are valid and sound. Ethical code is useful in this kind of evaluation.

STEP VI: The nurse acts on her ethical decision offer carefully weighing all alternative course of action. Once she acts, the nurse must be prepared to respond to objections and arguments from others.

HOW TO PREVENT RIVALRIES IN NURSINGPROFESSION.

1. The decision maker of the profession must specified qualifications required to occupy a particular position, example:e.g,

RN Nurses occupying the sit of Director of Nursing for a state. How can he/she contest and won amidst other health director with good academic qualifications such as degree, MSC, PhD etc in their relevant fields.

2. Encourage the nurse to move on in their academic carrier: ie they must grow academically. Life has changed drastically, from the normal rat race: going to school of nursing obtain your diploma result as a registered nurse and crown it with post diploma courses. My professional colleague, Nursing is more than that..

Infact, Nursing is crossing road.!

The world advancement in science and technology has brought in its wave sophistication of communication system, audio visual aids and even crime modus operand, internet, satellite & modern health equipment provide more than sufficient spice to life. So, for nursing profession to keep on relevant, it must move with this wave of modern development. Example:

A young graduate nurse was placed on RN holder with 5 years experience. This story generated a lot of rivalry between the two nurses.

Here, the solution is not cry or shedding of tears or flexing of muscles but the simple solution is that our RN Nurses colleagues should find their ways to university in other to developing themselves. This is the only way of resolving these types of problem.

3. The policy makers in the profession should give equal ability to different specialties to move on the ladder of their career. It is observed that, some specialties in nursing had been opened up, up to the highest level in the field of academic while some are still under developed. (Post diploma phase).

Now, that we have all seen reasons why position should be given to people who merit it by virtue of qualifications. It means, there will be some specialties that would not be able to attain the position, which will lead to other rivalries in between the specialties. Therefore, to prevent this, equal opportunities must be given to different specialties to move on academically.

Conclusion

Clarification of responsibilities for Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists and other health care givers. i.e. each profession must know their responsibilities and the limitation of their practice. This will go along way in avoiding clashes of responsibilities and duties that may degenerate to rivalries in-between Health Team.
