I recently posted three long pieces on computing and virtualization. There were two trends that mattered.(a). Enterprise computing was moving to the cloud - sometimes an external cloud - but more often-than-not an enterprise cloud. Computers would henceforth be virtual machines sitting on some mondo-powerful server and thin clients. This setup was superior for a range of reasons that I went into. But more than superior -...more
The Better Days of Dell Inspiron 1501Released in late 2006, the Dell Inspiron 1501 is among Dell's mainstream models. It belongs to such category mainly because of its consumer friendly price. Although it has been roughly four years, this model is still popular since the computer parts and specifications are on the higher end.The Processor BreakthroughThe Dell Inspiron 1501 is Dell's very first model to use only AMD as its...more
I thought something was missing when I read the news release that arrived this morning from Dell, touting a new smartphone running Google's Android operating system. The specifications listed there made its Aero look impressive enough, but they left out one detail: what version of Android came on the phone. So did the listing for the phone on Dell's site. Not good: Companies don't omit such an important detail if it's anything worth bragging about. My suspicions were proved right when Dell publicist Kristin Calcagno replied that the Aero runs "a superset" of Android 1.5.The added features she touted--for example, handwriting recognition and "one-click upload of photos to social sites"--could be interesting, but Android 1.5? Today? Really? For those unfamiliar with the progress of Google's smartphone software, Android 1.5 dates to April 2009. Almost all phones now ship with Android 2.1, and (far too) few bundle the 2.2 release Google introduced in May. The seemingly small difference in version numbers hides dramatic improvements in responsiveness, laptop battery life, support for third-party apps, networking and multimedia.(Trust me on that. I bought an Android 1.5...more
Dell doesn't have to start over in its quest to become a significant purveyor of technology for businesses after losing a multibillion dollar bidding contest for an obscure data-storage maker. But it won't be easy, either, for Dell to shake its "Dude, you're getting a Dell" image and move into the more profitable business of selling...more
Beancounters at market research firm Isuppli said that in the second quarter Dell shipped 10.5 million units worldwide. This was down a negligible 1.2 per cent from 10.7 million units in the first quarter and gave Dell a 12.8 per cent share of global shipments, down from 13.1 percent in the first quarter. While this should have been an...more
Oh, there's a new Android on the market, this time from Dell. I'm so excited I could, well, fall asleep. And that's not because the Aero barks like a dog -- which it does, according to our colleagues at PC World -- but because it's yet another Android, the increasingly ragged platform that is nonetheless garnering big sales as users become increasingly fed up with AT&T.Too Many Android Versions and ForksHere's a key to understanding what's wrong with the Dell Aero and with the platform: The Aero runs on Android 1.5, an operating system that is 16 months old and four versions behind the current Android OS.[laptop battery, digital camera battery, pda battery? For example, Dell has said it so highly customized the Android UI that it's unclear when or if it can let users update to the current Android 2.2 version. That's the kind of forking lunacy that so often...more
