Well no one was expecting that, were they? 0-0 against Algeria.
How bad is that?
To say that Algeria was possibly the better team is how bad it is. But that is the key word here team. England just didn't look like one, and quite frankly wouldn't have deserved victory even if they had somehow managed to sneak one out of the bag.
And no one was more aware of this than the staff at Eflex Computers. As they trooped in one after the other this morning, their faces all said the same thing, "England were shocking!"
As Gary, Paul, and Alex slowly got to work building their renowned cheap laptops and computers, the mood was as flat as Sven's Swedish tongue, and wet as McClaren's brolly.
These sentiments were shared by the lads:
Why oh why can't they play decent football? Why is it that a team like Algeria (no disrespect) with players playing second division club football in Italy turn up on the World Cup stage and proceed to upstage the mega-rich superstars of the British Premier league.
Why can't we play like Mexico, or Chile, or Uruguay. Or North Korea, or South Koreaor ANYONE else (except possibly the French who have been equally terrible!)
It's one of the great mysteries of our national team.
And when it becomes apparent that after all the worries about who was going to be in goal, the best player in an England shirt was David James who didn't actually have to do much apart from catch the ball now and again, and make the occasional last ditch scrambled clearance tells you how bad the others were.
It was if the clock had suddenly been turned back to the bad old days of Sven and McClaren. The fear had returned. The confidence had disappeared overnight like Ronnie Biggs.
And maybe that is where the England team should go for training to Brazil. Send them there to summer camp to learn how to play the game with style, and zest, and joy, and freedom, and a real sense of camaraderie, and team play.
Of course it's not just Brazil who play like this now. It's generally the South American way. But other nations are catching up.
Not so England. We are lagging far behind the rest of the world in terms of football development at national team level. In fact it could be argued that the way England played yesterday was like watching a Third World country from the 1970s.
Poor, and amateurish.
But, there is still another match, still another opportunity to prove that we can produce a decent display of football AND win a game, at the same time. That time comes next Wednesday
