It is expected to replace all indirect taxes, thus avoiding multiple layers of taxation that currently exist in India. Earlier our Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said that the Government is looking forward to bring the Goods and Services Tax along with the Direct Tax Code (DTC) in April, 2012. But now our Finance Ministry is coming with a fresh statement that the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) might not come into force along with the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) in April 2012. This will only create a nebulous environment over the future of the Goods and Service tax. However, the Finance Ministry indicated that the proposed GST may still be introduced sometime during 2012-13. GST is a transaction based tax.
