event Greening - Sustainable Event Management
Event greening is the process used to produce and implement an event with concern for environmental
, social and economic issues. The overall aim will be to find ways in which the industry can reduce the impact of activities surrounding events and exhibitions.
Sustainability in event management incorporates socially and environmentally responsible decision making into the planning, organisation, implementation of and participation in an event. It should start at the beginning of a project and involve all key players including clients, organisers, sub-contractors and suppliers.
The industry"s most costly sustainability issues specifically relate to landfill waste and energy use.
Event management companies are becoming more and more committed to reducing the environmental impact of their business and steps are already in place for many organisations.
Becoming Green
Many organisations are reviewing events during the planning stages and establishing the environmental impacts they may have, they are then setting themselves targets and objectives on quantifiable things including greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, waste and recycling.
Here are a few other ideas to help your organisation in becoming green:
Going paperless
Printing has been reduced and staff no longer print and file documents relating to each event, instead they can be saved electronically.
Reducing business travel
To reduce emissions from travel and to save time, companies can choose to hold internal meetings online.
Reducing company cars
Analyse how many company cars you actually need by looking at the mileage and use, you can then reduce them accordingly and help to save on carbon emissions.
Cycle to work scheme
Reduce carbon emissions and introduce a cycle to work scheme.
Switch off
If you turn everything in the office at the end of the day, you will be saving energy.
Keep up to date with legislation
Keep up to date with environmental legislation.
Recycling
Implement paper collection points throughout the office, and other collection points for plastics, aluminium and cardboard.
Water conservation
Reduce the amount of water used at an event.
Sustainability offers a number of benefits:
-Social benefits: depending on the event, it could benefit the local region to provide jobs, promote better working conditions and act as a catalyst for social improvement.
-Cost savings: Conserving energy, reducing waste, purchasing local products, and simply consuming less can save money.
-Positive reputation: it demonstrates the organisations commitment to the environment.
-Raise awareness: the events offer the opportunity to raise awareness amongst participants, staff, suppliers and the local community about the benefits of sustainable living.
-Return on investment: By pursuing greening, you will not only reduce costs, but also increase strategic opportunities.
Clients may also be more inclined to use an event organiser committed to thinking green, than one who isn"t.
Monitoring and evaluation is an essential component of event greening, and should be used to make continuous improvements.
