The History Of The Curragh Racecourse

The Curragh Racecourse, in County Kildare, Ireland is a horseshoe shaped course with a circuit of 2 miles, a run in of 3 furlongs and an uphill finish. The five and six furlongs are straight and an adjoining chute feeds into the home straight, which stages races of up to one mile. The Act defined the area of the Curragh as being 4870 acres and the management of it was handed over to a dedicated ranger. In 1870 the Act was updated to specify that only sheep could be grazed on the Curragh while the 1921 treaty saw the lands being passed over from the British crown to the minister for finance, and then onto the minister for defence who now administers the lands.
