Even the balls themselves take on bragging rights - perhaps it has never occurred to you that discount golf balls may work just as well. Golf's big names are playing this week, but not at the Bob Hope Classic

Bob Hope was almost too handsome to be a comedian, but what saved him was his nose, a small ski-jump that became part of the Hope brand. (Just check out the logo of his eponymous tournament, and every other drawing of the late American icon.)     What will save the Bob Hope Classic? For the second straight year it has no title sponsor, a fact that was made all the more conspicuous by Monday's announcement that Farmers Insurance will sponsor next week's Tour stop in San Diego. Phil Mickelson, a two-time Hope champion who made the pro-am his season-opener, got turned off by the windy Classic Club (an ill-advised, 2006 addition to the rotation of courses that lasted only three years) and hasn't played the Hope since 2007. The 2010 Hope, set to begin in the rain Wednesday, features another lefty as its marquee player: Mike Weir, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 37. A former Hope champion and an excellent mudder, Weir will get competition this week from Justin Leonard (2005 Hope champion, '08 runner-up) and a resurgent Ryan Moore. John Merrick, who played well at times during last week's Sony Open and was second to Pat Perez at the 2009 Hope, also could be...more

The Perfect Golf Swing 3

In this article we will look at the backswing that follows the takeaway, from about the 7.30 position up to the top of the backswing. Many amateur players make the mistake of either rushing their golf swing uncontrollably up to the top and down again, that they haven't a hope of consistently making an effective swing. When making your practice swing a good drill is to pause the club at 10.30 and check to see that the end of the club shaft is pointing at the ball and that your left arm is horizontal to the ground, with your wrists hinged slightlu upwards. It will be the unhinging of the writs that will generate all the power you need when you make your downswing..but more of that in the next article. Right now, you should check that the right elbow is tucked in nice and tight halfway back you allow the shoulders to rotate through to the op. That stops you creating the steep swing that often results in a slice. Do not allow the hands to get too far in front of your body. If you do, then your swing will be too steep and you'll cut across the ball through impact, creating a weak slice shot. A good drill to practice and will help you to keep the golf club on plane halfway...more
