'handlifts' Help Women Beat The Onset Of Ageing

A revolutionary new cosmetic treatment - dubbed the handlift - is helping scores

of women turn back the clock and win the battle against ageing skin.

Despite advances in cosmetic surgery, women who had been under the knife always complained that wrinkles on their hands betrayed their true age.

Skin on the back of hands is delicate and thin and can appear crepe-like and veiny with age.

Previous cosmetic procedures on the hands have involved transplanting fat but the resulting appearance tended to be thick and unnatural.

However, a new 20-minute treatment, which involves injecting tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the skin, is helping return the plumped, youthful appearance to a woman's hands and give the impression they belong to a women 10 years younger.

The injections work by encouraging water to bind to connective tissue in the hands more readily, plumping the skin and adding both elasticity and firmness.

Diane Vickers, 53, a health clinic manager, of Reading , Berkshire , underwent a 450 handlift last summer.

The treatment is given under local anaesthetic once a month for three months. Patients may also need 250 top up injections every 12 months.

'My hands have been exposed to plenty of sun and I suppose that took its toll,' Mrs Vickers said.

'They looked scrawny and definitely older than my face. Sometimes I felt they should belong to a woman of 65. The treatment plumped up my hands in a completely natural way. 'The veins were less pronounced and my hands looked smoother and softer. Suddenly, I had hands that people complimented me about and that made me feel good.'

Rajiv Grover, plastic surgeon and secretary of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said: 'Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like substance that binds with water beneath the skin, keeping it plump and hydrated.

'It depletes as we get older, leading to loss of volume and visible ageing signs. With the loss of firmness, skin may look loose and crepe-like. At the optimum age of 45 onwards, the treatment can take up to ten years off how a woman's hand looks.'
