Victorious by:Doreene Clement

"There it is again." I muttered to myself, frustrated as I washed my arm. Every morning for five or six days in the fall of 2003, I noticed rust-colored sticky stuff appearing on my left forearm and thigh. Finally, to my shock and horror, I discovered that the rust-colored sticky stuff was easily dripping from my left nipple. In disbelief, I collapsed into my bedroom chair, swirling with a mix of grief and fear. I stared at the blank white wall,...more

The Latest in Contact Lenses and Designs by:Dakota Caudilla

There is vast development and growth in the eye care industry today, particularly the contact lens sector, mainly because more and more people are starting to develop sight problems (because of consistent computer use and lengthy hours in front of the television set). Those with sight problems have two options, i.e. to wear glasses or to wear contact lenses. There are problems to both of these options. Eyeglasses are not irritating to the eyes but it is definitely cumbersome because it can be bulky and inconvenient, i.e. showering, exercising, gym, swimming, etc. In the meantime, there's the other alternative to eyeglasses, contact lenses. Some kids as young as 12-years-old have started wearing contact lenses instead of spectacles because they want to look good. As the demographics of contact lens users grow, contact lens designers and developers are scampering around for a more effective method of correcting the sight of short-sighted, long-sighted people and people with astigmatism. Bauch & Lomb recently came out with an ALTERNATIVE to contact lens. Instead of wearing contact lenses when you're awake and removing them when you're sleeping, the new Bauch & Lomb contact lens enables...more

The Wonderful World of Vitamins...Part 2 by:Colleen Palati

In Part 1 of this article I discussed the importance of vitamins in our diet and focused primarily on fat-soluable vitamins. Today, I will explore water-soluable vitamins and their importance in our daily diet. Water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin C, choline, biotin and the seven B vitamins dissolve in water and cannot be stored in the body for extended periods of time. Any excess water-soluable vitamins are excreted in urine. The following are descriptions of water-soluable vitamins: Vitamin C - Look for Vitamin C in broccoli, red peppers, currants, Brussel sprouts, parsley, rose hips, citrus fruits, and strawberries. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. Aids in wound healing, reduces the severity of the common cold, lowers cataract risk, and helps to lower blood pressure. Aids in repairing damaged cells, bones and teeth. Choline - Also known as "lecithin". Found mainly in soybeans, liver, oatmeal, cabbage, and cauliflower. Small amounts are present in most B-complex and multivitamin supplements. Choline is essential for cell membranes, normal brain function, and to facilitate the movement of fats in and out of our cells. Large...more
