Yesterday he was happy to lug a heavy-duty car battery around a field, with little apparent strain. And it was not for a roadside repair, but for his favourite sport of carriage racing.

The Duke was judging an event at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, and the battery was required to power a timer.

A spokesman said: The event takes place outside so there is no electricity supply.

The judges use the car batteries to power the timing devices which are placed on tripods at the beginning and end of each obstacle.

'When a carriage passes the first tripod it activates a timer which is turned off when the carriage passes the tripod at the opposite end.

The Duke, who had surgery to clear a blocked artery in December and turns 91 next month, carried the battery from his car to his judging post unaided.

The four-day Grand Prix, which ends this evening, attracted 52 competitors, with several members of the Royal Family turning out to watch the action.
