. Varnishing is sometimes necessary. People think it is quite a hassle to varnish wood flooring but in fact, it can be easy as breeze when you follow simple steps. iFloor, an expert in different kinds of flooring, shares with us tips on how to varnish your wood flooring.

PREPARE. Before doing any other things, you have to make sure that your wood flooring is prepared for refinishing. You can do this by removing the old varnish. You may use and electric floor sander to make it easy. If you don't own one, you can rent the equipment on different shops.

CLEAR. Clear the floor from anything. This means you have to move you furniture aside as well. Put them on another room for the meantime. It is better if you also remove the floor moldings to prevent scraping them using the electric sander.

SMOOTH. Make sure that your wood flooring is smooth for varnishing by checking screws and nails. Get rid of all tacks. If you see a nail not properly hammered, use a hammer to sink it in the floor. If holes are present, you can fill them in with putty and make sure to let dry.

SEAL. You can use any plastic sheeting to seal the entire room off. Apply adhesive tapes to secure them. This prevents dusts from other rooms to enter the room you are about to work on.

SAND OFF. Use the electric floor sander you rented to smooth out the old varnish. If you are not used to handling the equipment, ask someone for assistance. It is a heavy tool so if you lose control of it, chances are dents will ruin your wood floor.

DUST OFF. Get rid of every little ball of dust on the floor and even on the walls and ceiling. Use a good vacuum cleaner to remove these dusts. Make sure you check the vacuum's brush before using it. Use gentle vacuum brush to avoid scratches.

FIRST COAT. Choose a good brand of varnish. Read the entire instructions before you start and make sure to follow them. As this is the first coating, apply a thin layer first. Work on small areas until you finish the entire room. Let the first coat cry completely. This may take hours. Some may even take the whole day to dry like Polyurethane varnish.

SAND AND SMOOTH. Once the first coat completely dries up, use a fine sand paper to sand the floor. Then take a clean tack cloth and wipe the entire floor to get rid of dusts that have accumulated.

SECOND COAT. Using the same brand of varnish, apply a second coat to your wood flooring. Make it slightly thicker than the first coat. Normally, wood flooring should have two fine coats of varnish but you can add a third coat for better protection and polishing.
