The ice island is slowly drifting across the Arctic Ocean with the potential to make its way toward oil platforms and busy shipping lanes off of Newfoundland.The ice island is approximately one hundred square miles in size and is the largest northern hemisphere ice island since 1962. "It's so big that you can't prevent it from drifting. You can't stop it," said Jon-Ove Methlie Hagen, a glaciologist at the University of Oslo. The challenge now is to track the likely trajectory of the island to determine the potential danger which could be wreaked in the shipping lanes and Canada's offshore platforms in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland.The island is drifting toward the Nares Strait which could feed the island into southbound ocean currents. The Isla de los Alcatraces was named by the Spanish explorer Manuel de Ayala, and translates to mean the "Island of Pelicans." Alcatraz has been used as a Civil War fort, a Federal prison, a symbol of Native American plight, and is now a tourist destination. Many of the buildings that originally stood on the island are no longer there. Some prison building burned during the 1960s' American Indian Alcatraz occupation. The guard's residences, deteriorated beyond repair, were torn down in the 1970s. The remaining buildings are the barracks from the military base, the cell house, the lighthouse, and a few others. The "Day Tour" is most popular. It includes round-trip transportation to the island and the audio tour. Also popular and well-rated is the Night Tour, which includes extra activities.
