itvoir Novell acquired - the Inside Story

Novell has been acquired by Attachmate for $2.2 billion; the topic is hot bet of discussions in the technology sphere.

The acquisition has two interesting twists attached to it; primary being the Microsoft grabbing its intellectual property and second is the absence of VMware from the entire picture. Undoubtedly, Attachmate is the acquirer of major portion; Microsoft has still managed to acquire certain Novel Intellectual assets thereby making the acquistion a 2-part Deal.

The 2-part deal is on the road to successful completion but has left market analysts tight lipped on few aspects. The deal has many interesting dimensions to explore.

What Microsoft has to do with the deal?

Everyone one is aware of the fact that Microsoft has also gained access to few assets of Novell but still no details have been divulged on the same. Whilst, the tech world is awaiting the details on patents; trend watchers are curious to understand the strategy ahead for the company. However, it is being rumoured that Microsoft have snagged the core Linux patents to fight back with Red Hat Linux. Meanwhile, Microsoft is in deal with Novell over distributing its SUSE Linux certificates to its customers.

With the access to suspected Linux patents, Microsoft can bravely fight back with open source but at the same time it is too early to state that Microsoft is already on the winning side.

VMware vanishes What happened to the rumoured deal?

Since September, the rumours were floating in regards to the acquisition of Novell's Linux business by the virtualization vendor and in fact were appreciated by the tech world. Indeed, the speculators were ready with the list of supporting facts for the deal. It was suggested that with Novell SUSE Linux business, VMware can not only fend off Linux but would be a quite stronger rival to Microsoft. But now, with no words on the bidders; it is being doubted that VMware ever placed its bid forward.

Strategy Ahead for ISVs and OEMs:

Well the deal is being embraced and appreciated in the tech universe; apprehensions are no less. The strategists are impatiently waiting towards the arrival of strategy on how Attachmate plans to move ahead. Novell's SUSE Linux team had a strong relationship with ISVs like IBM, SAP and many budding contenders too. On the OEMs front, Novell was working in close conjunction with HP, Dell, IBM and others. The bottomline here is how Attachmate strikes a balance on both the fronts and walk ahead while keeping the old deals intact and hooked; the plan of action on the same is awaited eagerly. In the interim, analysts suggest that assurance of the enhanced momentum and proper attention can force ISVs and OEMs to stay glued to Attachmate.

Amid all the apprehensions, it is worth watching that how Attachmate CEO Jeff Hawn leverages the full potential of Novell's acquired assets.

Whilst Novell Attachmate deal is likely to close by 2011 Q1, the answers over the strategy ahead and what all assets Microsoft has acquired remain awaited!
