Gold panning has got to be one of the funnest hobbies I've every tried, and gold prospecting in general is just exciting for some reason. My friend and I have recently gone on a few day trips for gold panning and prospecting, and thinking back on them, we've really found some extraordinary things. Though we haven't really found that much gold, the other, more unexpected treasures, made the trips really amazing. The thing that I love about gold...more
Teenagers may not have the same penchant for jewelry as grown ups. You might see a lady wearing an expensive diamond necklace, or perhaps a set of pearls or emeralds. But rarely will you see a teenaged girl decked up in such resplendent jewelry. Does it mean that teenagers do not wear jewelry? They certainly do, but their interpretation of the word 'jewelry' is a bit different from what you may perceive as a grown up. Teens and Heavy Jewelry You...more
I love gold. I always have. I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but when I do, it's almost always gold. I can't really explain why I love that metal so much, or why it has an odd attraction for me, but from my earliest years, I can remember a fascination with gold. One of the local universities offers a goldsmithing class. Basically, they teach you how to assay, refine, and smelt gold, as well as how to create the wax molds for jewelry and then how to cast the gold using the molds you have made. I had a friend who was in one of those classes, and she was wearing a ring that she had made herself. It was a little rough around the edges, but for a first try, I think it was pretty good. Once things settle down after the holidays, I may look into that class myself. An important part of the process is precious metal refining. Raw gold contains a lot of impurities. It bubbled up from the earth, pushed through other types of rock and dirt, and tumbled down a river. All sorts of impurities were inculcated in the process, and as such, the gold itself has been compromised. The refining process removes all of those impurities and leaves the clean, beautiful gold behind.Refining is also...more
The price of gold is soaring, which is good or bad, depending on how you look at it. For amateur gold prospectors like my wife and myself, it is very, very good. We can go out to a river or site, and in a few short hours we can find enough gold to pay our bills for a month. Likewise, a person with some old jewelry that has lost its meaning can...more
For men, buying jewellery gifts for women can be quite a daunting task because an item of jewellery is usually a very personal choice and it has to be right. Women tend to know instantly if they like something or not, so for a man choosing jewelry gifts for her the pressure is on and there is no room for a mistake. You will be able to tell...more
For those of you who are unaware, there are two different sectors of gold coins out there: those made before the year 1933 and those made after. Though this may just seem like a difference of age, there are significant changes from one time period to another. One of the obvious ones is in the rarity of the coins as there were far less gold coins produced prior to 1933 than what we see nowadays. There is an even bigger difference though and that lies in the market volatility of the coins. Let's take a look at how you might want to approach your gold investments. If you're looking into a long term investment, pre-1933 gold is the way to go. The rare coins of that era are not subject to as much of the market's fluctuations as the modern bullion is. The value of bullion might change within an hour, but private coins remain fairly steady. Granted, there are still changes in the value of pre-1933 gold, but they are not as frequent or as significant as the changes of the bullions. This is due to a variety of factors, but mainly the older gold and silver coins are able to bypass the pressures of short sellers, so they make for better long term investments. If all you want to do is get in and...more

If you weren't aware of this, there are two different segments to gold and silver coins - those that were made before 1933 and those that were made after 1933. Why is this significant? Well, any of the pre-1933 gold and silver coins that you might...more
The modern day gold bullion is certainly a thing of beauty. There are so many ads for these coins nowadays that it might almost seem illogical not to buy them. They sound like a great investment at first, but what most people don't realize is how...more
Reading the title here, you might assume that the reason that the pre-1933 gold and silver coins have outperformed their followers is because of age. As something gets older, it gets more valuable, right? Well, that's only part of the story. The fact...more
If you look at the prices of gold in the past, you'll likely see a great deal of fluctuation. As the economy changes, so does the value of currency. In some cases, that greatly influences the value of coins, but not always. Private coins, or those...more
