journalism in pakistan

the journey for media throughout the history of pakistan has been a roller coaster ride. different political periods have affected the media. from what seemed to be the dark ages of media in general zia's time to comparitive golden ages of media during the reigns of bhutto, benazir and musharraf, the media has thrived. at present, the media probably enjoys more freedom than ever, thus our question arises. is the media, both print and electronic, playingits part in a just manner or is the media playing a demonic role in the name of freedom of speech?

during the US election campaign NATO had deployed forces along the western border of pakistan threatening to launch an attack inside pakistani territory in order to fight terrorism. at that very time, a renowned channel of pakistan aired a controversial interview that reignited the dying memories of the historical event of 9/11. was it an absolute necessity to air that interview in those precise circumstances?

moving on, journalists are given an immense responsibility of creating a certain good image, a reputation for the country.the question that arises is that is pakistani media capable of carrying out that task effectively? crime, economic crises, social problems are present in every society. why is it that in pakistan these issues are magnified to an unneccesssary extent?

to support my views i have compiled recent examples. in the 2005 kashmir earthquake, the government reacted more efficiently than ammerica did so during the tsunami yet the media whined and complained about the lack of government intervention in the matter. the same happened during the balochistan earthquakes.

it's high time the media reaized that creating a negative image of the country does not benefit the media inany way rather it invites criticism. we are what we want the world to think of us. why is it that major channels of the U.K and the US think several times before making the slightest negative comments about their countries? the media needs to pause for a moment and think about its incredible strength, that if misused can be disastrous. as Mark Twain puts it, 'There are only two forces that can carry light to all the corners of the globe... the sun in the heavens and the Associated Press down here'
