INTRODUCTION:
Allium sativum, commonly known asGarlic. Its close relatives include theonion, shallot, leek, and chive.The garlic plant'sbulb is the most commonly used part of the plant. The composition of the bulbs is approximately 84.09% water, 13.38% organic matter, and 1.53% inorganic matter, while the leaves are 87.14% water, 11.27% organic matter, and 1.59% inorganic matter.
ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY:
Garlic is also an antibiotic and antiseptic. It is proven to be effective against the following micro-organisms:
Escherichia coli, which causes intestinal dysbacteriosis and urinary infections.
Salmonella typhi, which causes typhoid, and other Salmonella genus that cause severe intestinal afflictions.
Shigella dysenteriae, which causes bacillus dysentery.
Staphylococcus and streptococcus, which causes furuncles (infected blemishes) and other skin infections.
Diverse types of fungi, yeasts, and some viruses, such as herpes.
The active principles of garlic are supposed to interact with the nucleic acids of the virus, thus limiting its proliferation.

Allixin and/or its analogs may be expected useful compounds for cancer prevention or chemotherapy agents for other diseases.
In test tube studies garlic has been found to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity. However, these actions are less clear in humans.
Garlic is also claimed to help prevent heart diseases atherosclerosis, highcholesterol, andhigh blood pressure andcancer.
A study found that garlic supplementation reduced accumulation of cholesterol on the vascular walls of animals.
Another study showed that supplementation with garlic extract inhibited vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol.
