Meet Molcajete Pig from Mexico Throughout Mexico there is no other mortar item as popular as the traditional Molcajete Pig. Made of either a hard wood or other materials like marble or stone, a molcajete pig is used along with pestle an item which resembles a baseball bat in its shape. Together this set up can easily grind grains, herbs or medicines. Put simply, a molcajete pig is the mortar and pestle of Mexico. The direct translation of  molcajete (mortar) is a Nahuatl language word from the Aztecs: "molli" the seasoning or sauce, and the bowl is the "caxitl".  Salsas and guacamole, to name a few, are a few dishes to prepare which a molcajete is customarily used. Additionally, the molcajete Pig is used to  mince chilies, and other cooking ingredients like herbs or spices. In order to help herbs and spices to be properly ground down to a small size, the Molcajete Pig has a rough surface.
