Magnetic printing is used so that the characters can be reliably read into a system, even when they have been overprinted with other marks such as cancellation stamps. The reader-sorter machine recognizes the shape of each character, once the toner is charged and these give a magnetic fingerprint which can be decoded by the machine.

Many other industries have also adopted the use of this Special Ink for their own printing needs. Airlines use MICR toners for printing their tickets. The same goes for events and concerts - their tickets are made with MICR toners as well. Most documents that require security and precision are now relying on MICR toners.
