This is a story that I completely missed and had really heard nothing about until this article but I am not surprised by the content. For the past 3 years almond growers in the U.S. have not been able to sell raw almonds in the marketplace due to previous outbreaks of Salmonella in 2001 and 2004. The USDA ruled that almonds were too dangerous to sell in their raw form so farmers were forced to fumigate them with a chemical that is a known...more
Ballet has changed very greatly since it began four hundred years ago, but some of the old ballets are occasionally seen in theaters today. Some of them had no real story, but were like acting out various ideas, such as a boy and girl making love, or jealousy, or other human actions and emotions. There were some characters that were used over and over in many ballets by different composers and writers. They were named Pierrot,...more
An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting in a war. It may apply to the whole war, or just to part of it. Sometimes opposing commanders agree to an armistice for a short period of time, to take care of their dead and wounded. After this type of armistice, the fighting begins again. A general armistice stops the fighting in an entire war. This armistice continues until a peace treaty is signed. When people speak of "the Armistice," they usually mean the one that ended the fighting in World War I. The World War I armistice was signed in a railroad car near Compiegne, a town in northern France. Generals of the Allied and German armies met there. They agreed to stop fighting at 11 o'clock in the morning on November 11, 1918. The Germans admitted they had lost the war and agreed to withdraw all their soldiers, and to give up many ships, submarines, trucks, and locomotives. There had been a false rumor of an armistice on November 8. On that date the people in France, England and America rejoiced because they thought the war had ended. Then, of course, they were disappointed, but not for long, because the real armistice was signed on November 11. November 11 was called...more
The greatest use of armor was seen during the Middle Ages. The Normans who conquered England in the year 1066 wore coats of linked chains. This chain armor was known as "mail." For several centuries, chain mail was the type of armor worn by all soldiers and knights. The men who made armor were called armorers. They were among the most...more
Interior ballistics is the study of what happens inside a gun when it is fired. A gun, like a revolver or rifle, is loaded by placing a cartridge containing an explosive in the gun barrel. (In all but the heaviest artillery, the cartridge or shell itself contains the explosive. See the article On ammunition.) When the trigger is...more
Armor became useful again in World War I. The soldiers of all the armies wore metal helmets. These helmets were made of hardened steel, and were useful in protecting the soldier's head against injury from the fragments of bursting shells. The helmets used in World War II were better than those used in World War I. They were deeper and protected more of the head and back of the neck. Some body armor was also used in World War II. Many American fliers wore "flak suits." These suits were really nothing more than vests and aprons. The vests and aprons had many pockets in them, into which small plates of metal were placed. These flak suits saved many fliers from injury. (The word flak comes from the German word for anti-aircraft artillery.) Many experiments have been made with bullet-proof clothing. During the Korean War, the United States soldiers sometimes wore bullet-proof clothing. It was usually made of a lightweight plastic material, several layers in thickness. These bullet-proof articles of clothing could stop all but a direct hit. The word "armor" is also used to describe tanks and cars that are protected by heavy metal plates. Today we speak of an armored...more
