Teve o privilégio de conviver com Theodor Herzl e ser amigo de Freud, Rolland e Joyce. Em 1934, a ascensão do nazismo o fez peregrinar pelo mundo. Radicou-se inicialmente na Inglaterra e, angustiado, suicidou-se no Brasil. João Pereira Coutinho, colunista da Folha Online, decifrou a sua angústia: "Os homens carregados de passado acabam sempre por voltar ao local de todas as partidas". Escritor de sucesso, seu primeiro trabalho publicado em 1902, "Silberne Seiten" (Cordas de Prata), é poético. Celebrizou-se como biógrafo, sendo ainda ensaísta, romancista e dramaturgo. Escreveu o famoso livro "Brasil um país do futuro".
