Have you found that your muscles are sore and tight

? Maybe your movement is restricted when playing sports, reaching for that tall shelf, or going about your daily activities?

Easy, daily stretching is a simple way to create a radical change within your body, and almost every activity you participate in. By definition, stretching is deliberately elongating a specific muscle to its fullest length.

As you regularly do this, it will increase in elasticity and become easier to use. With an increase in range of motion, your overall body control will increase as you become more flexible.

While it is very important to stretch your muscles before and after playing sports, exercising, and participating in rigorous physical activity, we will focus on gentle muscle work that can be done at home. There are two different forms of stretching that you can do at home-active and passive.


For the sake of space and time, we will only talk about active here. It is the easiest, most simple home-plan.

Active stretching occurs when deliberately using your own body to elongate specific, targeted areas. For instance, bending over and touching the floor while standing is actively targeting the muscles in the back of your legs, or your hamstrings.

There are several health benefits involved. It is vastly important for men and women of all ages.

Perhaps the most basic benefit is that of reduced muscle tension. When we reduce the tension in our body, we have a decrease in headaches, injury, stress, pulled muscles, and pain.

The more our bodies are trained to relax, the better we can perform during the day, and sleep at night. Another great benefit is an increase in circulation.

When we elongate different part of our body, we allow for a greater amount of blood to flow throughout. As this blood travels more easily and quickly through our bodies, we are given a boost of energy.

With more energy, we are able to accomplish more and burn more calories throughout the day. This simple task can create a chain of events that will affect our whole day!

Another great benefit comes to our joints. Our joints are directly connected to muscles which run throughout our bodies.

The more relaxed and flexible we are, the wider the range of motion we give to our joints. When our joints are healthy and able to perform their job, this can decrease our chance of getting arthritis in the future.

While there are many more benefits to mention, the last we will say is, it feels good! It is relaxing to the mind, and helps you to calm and release before starting a busy day, or going to bed at night.

Many people are afraid to stretch because when they do, they find it is painful or uncomfortable to them. That only means they need it even more!

As it is with everything, the more you allow your body to practice, the better and easier it will become. Even trying to fit in just five minutes a day will make each day after that, more and more simple.

Here are three easy stretches you can do in just five minutes. Each is basically a simple yoga pose.

For the first, stand tall with your back straight, your feet wider than the hips, your arms in line with the shoulders (like a "T"), and your palms down. Turn your right toes out to the side, and point your left toes forward.

Lean to the right as if reaching your right fingertips toward the right wall. From there, bend at the side of the waist, allowing your right hand to fall naturally, resting on your knee, shin, ankle, or the floor.

For the second, sit on the floor with your back straight, shoulders down, abs engaged, and legs extended in front of you. Bend your right knee to place your foot flat on the floor.


Wrap your left arm around your right leg, and twist to your right side, supporting yourself by placing your right hand behind you. This is a great stretch for you back and torso.

For the last, come to your hands and knees with your hands shoulder-width apart, knees hip-width apart, and back flat. Keep your knees and ankles separated and your toes curled under as you shift your weight back over your heels, lengthening your spine, relaxing your head and neck, and reaching forward through your fingertips.

As we have discussed, just a few minutes of simple stretching can dramatically improve many different areas of your life. When it is as simple as that, why not?
