"service" Providers
A service provider is a communications company that provides service to the existing lines that you
, as a customer, have access to. In some areas you will have multiple options for phones and internet service, but in other areas your options may be limited. The service provider does not have the ability to change this, all they can do is service the lines that are available to you in that particular area. There are companies that are called ILECs that actually provide the cable to the communities, and these are the companies that determine what type of lines will be available and where.
With this being established, what then are the service providers for? The service providers provide the service that turns on your phones or your internet. These are the companies that handle your problems or interruption in service. The service provider is just what the name says they are, they are there to provide you service. This is lost sometimes in the technological jargon that is thrown around. Many customers forget that this is just like any other service that is provided to them, and poor quality and poor service would not be tolerated from any other industry, so why in this one? Just like an agent for a pro athlete, your service provider should be working for you. Sometimes there will be outages and interruptions in your service, but your service provider is responsible for getting these issues handled and in a timely manner.
This was an issue that had bothered me since I first started in this business, and I it confused me as to why a customer would stay with a company that did not treat them correctly. Over time I have found out that business owner either think one of two things that keep them with a company that dissatisfies them. One, they think that the larger companies are going to provide them with the best service possible just because they are larger, or two, they think that the larger companies are going to be the most cost effective. This is usually not true in any business. Usually the larger companies are the ones who are ILECs as well, and they have huge overhead to cover, so their customer pays for it, they are usually more expensive. Also, the larger a company, the less time they have to spend personally with each company. This means that the larger companies usually have package plans, and if you do not fit into that plan then you do not get service. The smaller providers are usually the ones that will customize your plans to your specific business needs, offer you what you need, and remove what you don not.
The word "service" in the phrase "service provider" has been lost in recent times due a growing numbness developed by lack of personalization between business and customer. The saving grace is that there are companies that have seen this decline in customer service and have thrown their hat into the ring with the goal to win over business the old fashioned way... to earn it. Let us support these businesses, and let us be like these businesses. Let us think outside of our own shoes for a moment and try to see the customer's point of view. Let us offer great service!
