"what Is An Air Compressor?" - Simplified

The wind on our planet is a one of the most powerful forces of nature

. It has brought about a lot of topographical changes in its wake. Understanding its force, made mankind invent a complex tool based on simple mechanics of physics.

An Air Compressor is a mechanical device that works on purely mechanical or a diesel or gasoline engine or electric engine for trapping air and forcing it into container. This container, by geometric specifications, is smaller than the actual amount of forced into it. Usually, the innards of a container are measured by the amount of cubic litres of liquid or gaseous substance that it can hold. However, an air compressor will force greater amount of air into any such container, usually a chamber of sorts.

How is it capable of capturing such a powerful substance from our atmosphere and store it? Let us understand how.

An air compressor works on either of two mechanisms - positive-displacement or negative-displacement. Positive-displacement involves a simple principle of forcing air into a chamber whose volume is reduced to effect the compression.

The former mechanism has one or more pistons, which pump air into an air chamber via a constant motion of pistons. These air compressors use unidirectional (i.e. opening up only in one direction) valves that guide air into this chamber, where the air gets compressed. Another assembly of simple motors or rather rotary screw compressors compress by matching two helical screws, which when turn, draw air into an air chamber. The volume of the air so pulled in reduces as the screws turn. Think of two screws with threads in opposing directions lined up against each other, tightly. This will cause air to be pulled in, much like the propeller of an aircraft or even the fins of a common floor-standing fan. Another type of air compressors using positive-displacement is the Vane compressing system. Vane compressors have a slotted rotor with varied blade placement, which guides air into a chamber and compresses the air volume.

Negative-displacement air compressors comprise centrifugal compressors. These devices use centrifugal force, which is generated by a spinning impeller that accelerates and then decelerates captured air, which causes the difference in the air pressure, which results in the compression. A product based on this mechanism, which is a common backyard tool is the leaf blower or even the blowing mechanism of your household vacuum cleaner.

Air compressors are the core 'engines' that drive many an appliance such as your refrigerator as well as industrial grade equipment like a furnace at a smelting factory.

Some of the applications of Air Compressors are:

- Blowing up deflated tyres

- Pumping high-pressure clean air to fill gas cylinders

- Supplying moderate-pressure clean air to a submerged surface supplied diver

- Pumping moderate-pressure clean air for driving some office and school building pneumatic HVAC control system valves

- Producing a large amount of moderate-pressure air to power pneumatic tools - such as nail gun, air brush, sand blaster, etc

- For generating heavy quantities of moderate-pressure air for macroscopic industrial processes (for e.g. cement plant bag house purge systems or oxidation for petroleum coking)
