Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema palladium. It has often been called "the great imitator" because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases. The route of transmission of syphilis is almost always through sexual contact.

Most people think that kissing is a safe activity. Unfortunately, syphilis, herpes, and other infections can be contracted through this relatively simple and apparently harmless act.

Symptoms of syphilis

After becoming infected with syphilis, there is an incubation period between of 9 to 90 days (the average being around 21 days) before the first symptoms of the disease appear. Each stage of syphilis has characteristic signs and symptoms but any particular sign or symptom of may or may not be present.

Medical experts describe this disease by dividing into four stages-primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary (late).

In its late stages, untreated syphilis, although not contagious, can cause serious heart abnormalities, mental disorders, blindness, other neurologic problems, and death.

Preventing Sexual transmission disease (STD)

Because syphilis is an STD, the best way to prevent getting it is to abstain from having sex.

Sexual activity with more than one partner or with someone who has more than one sex partner also increases the risk of contracting an STD.

Using condoms

When properly and consistently used, condoms decreases the risks of STDs. Latex condoms provide greater protection than natural-membrane condoms. The female condom, made of polyurethane, is also considered effective against STDs.

Using douche can actually increase a woman's risk of contracting STDs because it can change the natural flora of the vagina and may flush bacteria higher into the genital tract.

Can syphilis cause HIV?

Genital sores (chancres) caused by syphilis make it easier to transmit and acquire HIV infection sexually. There is an estimated 2- to 5-fold increased risk of acquiring HIV if exposed to that infection when syphilis is present.

Ulcerative STDs that cause sores, ulcers, or breaks in the skin or mucous membranes, such as syphilis, disrupt barriers that provide protection against infections.

The genital ulcers caused by syphilis can bleed easily, and when they come into contact with oral and rectal mucosa during sex, increase the infectiousness of and susceptibility to HIV.

Having other STDs is also an important predictor for becoming HIV infected because STDs are a marker for behaviors associated with HIV transmission.
