subject: Pearly Penile Papules - A Common Condition That Triggers Excessive Concern [print this page]

With so much fear about sexually transmitted diseases due to lack of information, it is quite natural to be concerned if you find anything unusual with your genitals. A frequent problem that leads to undue concern is pearly penile papules, which are little bumps appearing around the head of the penis.

Pearly penile papules can often raise an alarm, as an uninformed person might consider it to be serious disease like a cancer or an STD. As those affected by the condition are not comfortable talking about it, the situation can easily lead to distress. It is important to get the condition diagnosed by an expert, as bumps can also be a sign of something dangerous. If an expert confirms that your condition is pearly penile papules, which are absolutely benign, then you have reason to be relieved.

Pearly penile papules are round in shape and they are usually the colour of flesh. Research is still going on to discover the causes of this condition, but all experts agree that it does not fall under the category of STDs. In fact the condition is quite common, especially among young uncircumcised males, and many cases show that they can appear and disappear for no apparent reason.

Although there is no need to worry about pearly penile papules, you may want to have them treated for cosmetic reasons. The good news is that there are several treatment options available to remove these bumps. The most popular treatment is the use of a CO2 laser to make the bumps disappear.

You would be justified in feeling a little concerned about use of laser in a sensitive area, but there are no proven side effects of the treatment. There could be a little bit of pain for a couple of days, but it goes away in less than a week.
