subject: College Single Mothers Can Help Ease The Burden Of Tuition Costs [print this page]

Remember those scholarship essays you had to write in order to get all that college money? If those articles had been published in a newspaper or national magazine you could have been paid up to $1 a word -- or more. That's about the average freelance writer's rate these days. But how much value did you actually receive from writing those essays? Let's think about this.

There are more sources for college money than you are probably aware of. Money can be available from government sources, large corporations and even non-profit organizations. Grants and scholarships are not like loans: You don't have to apply based on your credit or ability to repay (although there are requirements; more on that later) and in most cases you don;t have to pay them back. Ever.

The things you get with your scholarship cash may not be the top of the line, or the very best quality, but consider this: if you had to pay for it all out of your own pocket, would you be spending top dollar? Probably not. We all have a budget, after all.And not all scholarships will provide for every little thing that you need. Some only cover specifically the cost of tuition and books, leaving you on our own to buy your own supplies and food. However you figure it, you've gotten a great deal of value from your little scholarship essay.

It's a given fact that not everybody enjoys writing -- to some, it's a torture on the level of the Chinese Water Torture. But even for those people, putting out your best effort in writing your scholarship essay can pay great rewards, both financially and emotionally. Some college essays are one to two thousand words or even more. (Be sure to carefully watch the word limits so that you don't go under or over.) This article is approximately 500 words (more or less) and it's considered quite short.

Whether or not you take the time to apply for grants or scholarships, just be sure to apply for financial aid at your school of choice. College tuition is expensive, and gets more so by the day. It's a shame to have these resources there for the taking and just pass them by. When you've made the decision to continue your education, be sure to make it financially easy on yourself as well.
