By choosing the right pectoral exercises, you can put together some really effective pec workouts that will inevitably force your chest to grow. If your goal is to build a more eye catching chest, then the upper body exercises that you choose are important to the process. If you piece together your chest workout with exercises that dont fit certain criteria, then youll ultimately have a hard time building up your pecs. In this article, Im going to uncover the specific criteria that your upper body exercises need to meet in order for you to stimulate some serious chest growth, as well as list a few of my favorite chest building exercises.

First things first. In order to stimulate pectoral muscle growth, you absolutely must perform muscle building exercises that meet a few conditions. First, the chest exercises that you choose, need to allow you to actually target your pectoral muscles. If you choose chest exercises that place most of the emphasis on your shoulders, then your shoulders will be doing most of the work and in turn achieving the benefits of doing that work (youll stimulate muscle growth in your shoulders instead of chest growth). So you want to focus on movements that specifically target your upper body muscles. Its ok if the pec exercises also incorporate your shoulders or triceps, but the primary muscle group in the movement should definitely be your pec muscles.

The next piece of criteria that the upper body exercises that you choose for your pec workouts need to meet is that each of the exercise that you choose need to allow you to move a pretty heavy amount of weight. Lifting progressively heavier weights over a full range of motion is exactly how you force your muscles to grow, so it only makes sense that if youre wanting to add size to your pectoral muscles, then you should be lifting heavy weights for each of your chest workouts.

The third piece of criteria is something that most gym rats completely overlook. Youve got to actually enjoy performing the pectoral exercises that you select! If you hate the exercises that you put into your pec workouts, youre not going to be able to hit your pectoral as hard as youd be able to if you actually enjoyed performing the pec exercise in the first place, so make sure to stick with a few of the chest exercises that you actually enjoy. That said, sometimes youve got no choice but to work in a few pectoral exercises that you don't really like, but try not to construct your chest workouts around these pectoral exercises, instead find a few that you really like and fit them into the workout.

Listed below are a few of my favorite pec exercises ( in no particular order). After looking over this list of exercises, I can honestly say that about 95% of all of my upper body workouts are composed of these highly effective pectoral exercises. Every once in a while, I'll throw in a few sets of cable crossovers to the mix, but that's about as creative as I get with my upper body workouts.
