subject: Dermal Fillers: Know The Ways In Which They Can Help [print this page]

There are many types of dermal fillers available on the market today, each with different advantages and disadvantages. With so many to choose from, it may be difficult to make a decision.

Although it is best to discuss with your plastic surgeon which is best to address your individual needs and aesthetic goals, there are some dermal fillers which are suited to most skin types such as Radiesse.

These types of good dermal fillers can diminish and even eliminate deep facial wrinkles and furrows. These are popularly used in areas such as the deep nasiolabial folds, which are the wrinkles that run from the nostril to the corner of the mouth.

However, they can also be used for the deep furrows that line the forehead, crow's feet around the eyes, and some scars. It can even be used to augment the lips, create a more voluminous, youthful appearance, as well as to plump the cheeks and shape the chin and jaw.

Some cosmetic fillers are much more versatile than most dermal fillers because it doesn't just temporarily mask the problem, but can help show visible improvement with repeated use over a period of time. Some products like Radiesse are in a gel form made from calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres, which occur naturally in the body.

The microspheres attach onto the facial tissue and plump them; however, they also create more natural collagen production in the body, strengthening weak tissues and giving them a healthier appearance over time.

Besides creating collagen in the body, these type of products also last much longer than most other dermal fillers. It can last up to two years and even longer in some cases. Recurring treatments may cause significant improvement overtime. Most other fillers last between six and eight months with few or no long-lasting results and the necessity for continual visits to the surgeon.

The procedure using these fillers is virtually pain-free with a quick recovery (generally you can return to work the next day). The surgeon will use a small needle to inject the filler into the target areas in small doses.

You will be able to see the wrinkles or hollow areas immediately plump up and gain volume. You may choose to take an over the counter pain killer before or after the procedure to reduce any mild discomfort you may feel. Depending on how many areas are to be treated, the process may take anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes.

These kind of effective fillers have very few side effects and risk for potential complications. Following the injection there may possibly be some minor pain, bruising, or swelling. This will generally subside within a day or two and won't cause any long-term damage. Reaction to the injection depends on individual sensitivity. For the first few days following surgery you'll want to treat the injection sites gently and wear protection against the sun.

Dermal fillers are a great option for those looking for a more youthful appearance without the need for constant touch-ups and visits to the surgeon. The procedure tends to be more expensive than other surgical options, but the results and benefits often outweigh the price difference.
