subject: So You Need Help to Sleep At Night? [print this page] Author: Michael Young Author: Michael Young
There are those who fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow. There are those who might mull the days events for a few minutes, maybe a half hour, then drift off to dreamland. Then, there are those of us who, no matter how much we want to sleep, we lay awake for hours. For me it usually amounts to my mind racing from one topic to another, then I end up becoming frustrated. At this point all I can think about is my inability to fall asleep. I keep thinking, if I dont sleep soon Im going to be so tired tomorrow, or why cant I fall asleep like everyone else?, or Im so tired why can I sleep?. Its very aggravating, and it is a vicious cycle. The more frustrated I become, the less likely it is Ill ever fall asleep. So I, like you, need help to sleep at night. So what do you do? Its a nightly occurrence and it is simply too dangerous to start taking some sort of drug to help to sleep at night . So you either need to keep struggling to sleep, or you take action. It is not necessarily a problem that can be solved tonight, but if you are willing to stick to a plan, you will be able to get to sleep EVERY night. The problem for most of us is not that we arent tired, it is that our minds wont allow us to fall asleep. We already assume we need help to sleep at night. The best way to solve this problem for good is to get on a sleep schedule. I know that seems kind of lame, but it is very important. If you go to bed at the same time every night, and get up at the same time every morning, you will improve your chances of falling asleep drastically. Other things you should do to help to sleep at night include, not eating at least an hour and a half before going to bed. You should try not to watch TV a half hour before you go to bed. You should make sure your bed is very comfortable, and your room is dark enough and quiet. Doing these things will give you the best help to sleep at night. You may not fall asleep immediately, but after some time, you will train your body (and mind) when you should be falling asleep. Now, you might need some immediate help to sleep at night, and that can come in many ways as well. The most effective thing is to simply concentrate on your breathing. Focus only on your breathing and nothing else. This will get your mind focused in one place and off of your current frustration. Since your frustration is essentially what is keeping you awake, this is key. So good luck, and good night!About the Author:
