"Can I go swimming when I have a yeast infection?" This question, regularly asked by active women, arises from a myth about yeast infections. That is when infected, a woman needs to stay totally dry to be able to "dry out" the yeast. Let's separate the myth from the reality and discover how you can best take care of yourself.

Candida albicans, the fungus responsible for your yeast infection, grows best in warm, dark and damp places. That's why it's important to wear breathable,clean,dry clothing. Loose fitting organic materials like cotton are preferred. Steer clear of super tight jeans and synthetic fabrics including lycra and nylon. In hot weather, a loose fitting sun dress and clean cotton panties will slow down the growth of the Candida fungus. They are cool and comfortable, too.

Swimming by itself doesn't lead to the growth of Candida albicans. Being wet for a short time will not pose a problem. The problem is created when you wear your damp swimsuit or other damp clothing for an extended time. After swimming, dry yourself off completely and change into dry clothes made of natural cloth. For the same reason, take off sweaty garments soon after a workout.

Candida is not transmitted through water. The chemicals in the pool and the salt in the ocean will destroy the yeast organisms. You do not have to worry about catching a yeast infection by swimming or giving it to somebody else either. In fact, the exercise you get working out or swimming will make your body stronger and aid your immune system in fighting off the infection.

Candida albicans grows best and will cause a yeast infection when it has an environment which is warm, damp and dark. By itself, swimming won't bring about an infection if you keep dry immediately after swimming. If you still have Candida troubles, or if you have recurring infections, you will need additional assistance.
