subject: When Does Doing The SAME Thing Get You Different Results? [print this page]

By now you realize that in order to be successful in achieving any goal, there are certain steps to getting you there. These same steps can work practically for any goal. However, for the sake of this report and to remain in my own area of expertise, we will apply them to maintaining proper weight and staying fit.

With so many results-proven exercise and weight loss programs available, why is it that some people have yet to tap into a tried-and-true method to attain their own personal fitness success?

All these programs work for the people who have stuck to them long enough to get results. However, the people prescribing these programs may not always prepare you for what it takes to stick to the regimen and then maintain the results. They assume that the mere commitment of buying into it, signing up, purchasing the product, or showing up, should demonstrate readiness.

Sojust how do they do it? What is the secret ingredient? Where do you find it?

Exercise "readiness" is definitely a prerequisite.

Yet, being "exercise ready" can go beyond just a physical go-ahead from your doctor. Sure you can be told you are good to go, but what safeguards need to be in place to guarantee you will stay on track?

For years I have attended my annual world fitness conference to keep up with all the new fitness technologies, buy the latest equipment, learn the latest advances in exercise science, obtain new credentials, etc.

To me the most important sessions are the valuable lessons in how to keep clients motivated and held accountable. Without this, I can still have the best workouts, be the most fit, enthusiastic, educated, well-equipped trainer out there;

but if I have learned anything in the past 37 years of professional fitness instruction, I know that in order for either one of us to succeed at getting you the results you're after You Need TO DO THE S.A.M.E. THING!

The acronym translates like this:

SUCCESSFUL ADHERENCE METHOD for EXERCISE

Actually, it is just a matter of doing the S.A.M.E. thing long enough, regularly enough, and intently enough to follow through for the desire result. As my chosen acronym implies, the KEYS are in place once you have practiced doing the SAME thing-Successful Adherence Method for Exercise long enough to make a habit.

Let's just reduce this to ridiculous. The reason you have the habits you now possess is because you have repeatedly done the same things long enough to ingrain a behavioral pattern. Maybe that pattern slowly crept in as a comforting agent to a situation you could not control. Doing the same thing gets the same result. Doing the S.A.M.E. thing is different.

A Successful Adherence Method for Exercise first starts with a decision to change.

Mental readiness has to happen first and that is when the "pain" of making the change is perceived to be less than the "pleasure" of staying in the same "comfortable" place.

Your belief in your own ability to fulfill personal goals is self-efficacy. When you start doing what you say you will do by doing the SAME thing frequently, then you are starting to build self-efficacy. This can then transfer over to others areas of your life empowering you to achieve many different types of goals. It all starts when you make that decision to change and stick to it.
