Water will help to loosen any particles left in your mouth and keep your mouth wet. You can also chew a piece of sugar free gum to keep your mouth wet.

Certain medications can be part of the halitosis causes, they can cause dry mouth and there is not too much you can do about it. If you are taking good care of your mouth but still find that you have bad breath and a dry mouth speak with your doctor and see if he or she can change you medication or maybe give you something that will help produce saliva.

Eating garlic and onions can certainly give you immediate bad breath, but the problem with these and other foods is that they get absorbed into your bloodstream, transfer into your lungs and you breathe out the smell long after the food is gone. These foods are another one of the halitosis causes that you can only help by avoiding the food when you are particularly worried about your breath.
