subject: Discovering The Longer Lasting Light Bulb [print this page] Long life light bulbs where the first thing I ever got my husband to splurge on - he is the type of man that considered providing light to his family at a little extra cost splurging. My husband is the type of man who likes to save money on everything he can; frugal should have been his middle name. I never knew where he got it from, as his parents where very wealthy and spent money like it grew on trees.
He would buy our children's Christmas presents on the summer sale (and I would have to move them every week so they didn't find them), when he did the weekly food shop everything was from the economy section and for my last birthday he gave me a bouquet of the most beautiful pink roses (my favourite flower) only to discover when I went to retrieve the paper for him he had cut them from our own front garden. It wasn't as if we didn't have money to spend, we had paid off our mortgage years before, we don't have any loans and we both have very good paying jobs. He always says he is saving for a rainy day and I always reply I think we have saved enough now to cover a year of storms.
One day one of my friends stopped round for a cup of tea and a chat (and a slice of cake, which I had gone and bought as soon as my husband had left for work that day). She started telling me how her kitchen light bulb went a few days previously and I couldn't help thinking what an odd thing this was to tell someone you hadn't seen in a while, was her life really that boring? None the less I continued to listen she said she'd bought some long life light bulbs on sale, she couldn't remember how long ago but she knew she hadn't changed the kitchen one for over a year now maybe even coming up to two. At that moment a light switched on in my head, we were constantly changing the light bulbs in our house, with the children leaving every light on that they could, to drive their father mad. I started quizzing her on how much they cost, where she got them pretty much every detail about them.
Later that night after dinner me and my husband sat down to attempt to watch some television whilst our children washed up as loudly as they possibly could. I started telling him of the conversations I had had with my friend that day and about the long life light bulbs. Take a guess what his first question to me was ......... If you guessed anything to do with the price you would be right, I explained to him everything I knew that initially on some on them they were slightly more expensive that the cheap light bulbs he insisted on buying, but in the long run they lasted about three times longer so they would work out cheaper. Also they used less energy than regular light bulbs so the long life light bulbs would save us that bit of money on the electricity bill every month. After almost an hour I finally convinced him to at least buy one so we could try it out.
The next day we headed out to our local supermarket, we thought it would be simple how many long life light bulbs could there possibly be. Turns out there where a few more than we thought, though we noticed a trend that most of them guaranteed at least 1000 hours. Apparently there were also different types of light that these bulbs could provide such as cool light, soft light and day light. We decided to try a soft light one for our living room, as it was the most used room in the house. When we got home my husband went and put the new Long life light bulb in and I made a note on the calendar so we could keep track on how long it really lasted.
One year later we have long life light bulbs all over our house in all the different variations depending on what room and light they are in and we still haven't changed the one in our front room.
