subject: Vacuum Cleaners - Which Type To Choose [print this page]

For cleaning, vacuum cleaner is still the most effective tool to use, although it is not the least expensive solution. Now that vacuum cleaner grows into a full-blown industry with hundreds of choices, it is often confusing to find the right one for your need. How do you choose the best vacuum cleaner?

Canister and upright are the two main types of vacuum cleaners for household uses. If you often find yourself reaching into smaller space, avoid uprights as they are heavier and bulkier. When cleaning small gaps, you will find it hard to maneuver upright vacuum.

As the handle is separated from the cylinder, you will find it easier to handle and move around. Unless you are an expert in vacuum cleaner, chances are you will not understand most of the things in the feature list. Who has the time to understand what they mean? After all, we are busy.

Fortunately, most of them are not that important at all if your need is not that unique. You only need to pay attention to a few things.

The first one is suction power. Wattage of the motor usually determines the power but the efficiency of the motor itself also matters. You need more suction power if you clean pet hair on the carpet every day. A beater brush may also help in this case.

Vacuum cleaners may come with or without a bag. Until recently, every vacuum cleaner collected dirt in a bag. This vacuum will lose its suction power as the bag fills up. Bagless vacuum tends to be more expensive but it doesn't lose its suction power. Bagless type is not suitable for anyone with asthma.

Next, you want to look at the filtration. Filters will trap a large amount of very small particles and recirculate the rest back into the air. Good filters will be able to trap more and much smaller particles that others cannot. Power filtration comes only with middle to high end vacuum cleaners. HEPA filters are able to trap at least 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns, which make them preferred by allergy sufferers.

A best vacuum cleaner for one individual may be the worst one for others. So it's important to have a list of requirements. Most often people complain about weights and loudness. Others don't care that much for weight as long as it has huge suction power. Create a checklist of what you need first... then search around for reviews and use that checklist as a guideline.
