The Old Town is quite literally where the original town began. As with all cities it grew outwards from that point, but today the Old Town remains as a distinct reminder of how Prague grew up. The most famous location in the Old Town is its square, known simply as the Old Town Square. To many visitors this is the key sight to see, and it really does take you back in time as well.
You can trace the beginnings of this part of the city back to the 12th century. Much of the architecture here is original and in very good condition too. Prague considers itself very lucky that it was not heavily damaged during the Second World War, when many other cities were not so lucky. As a result it still has many examples of architecture stretching back for hundreds of years.
Many people are struck by the simple beauty of the Old Town Square when they first see it. It has an attractive fountain in the middle, but don't let this take your attention away from the other sights you can see in the square itself.
For example one of the biggest attractions here is the Astronomical Clock. If you think you know what to expect from a clock fixed to the outside of a Town Hall, think again. This one regularly draws crowds because of the display it puts on every hour. This is when you will see Christ and his Twelve Apostles appear through a small doorway and march round together. The figures have been there since the 15th century.
As you can see there is a lot to appreciate in the Old Town in Prague. Once you reach the square you should make the time to grab a coffee or a snack so you can just sit and take a proper look at your surroundings. The buildings and atmosphere here are worth making the most of.
Flights to Prague will bring you into Ruzyne International Airport. From there you have the whole of the city to explore and discover. As you can see, the Old Town alone simply cannot be missed.
