subject: Hydrogen Peroxide Douche for Treating Bacterial Vaginosis: How Effective is Hydrogen Peroxide for Treating BV? [print this page]

Bacterial vaginosis is the disease of the female reproductive tract, which results from the proliferation of bacteria not normally present in the female organ. These bacteria may come elsewhere from the body such as the rectum or from bacteria inherent to other people such as that transferred through sexual contact. Bacterial vaginosis, though it affects the reproductive organ and can be triggered by multiple sex partner, is not a sexually transmitted disease. Treatments are numerable and quite effective and involve taking of drugs and employing natural methods.

One of the natural methods used as an adjunct to drugs is hydrogen peroxide douche for treating bacterial vaginosis. Douching refers to the method of cleansing the reproductive tract by the application of a stream of water. To remedy vaginosis, the method used consists of a mixture of two tablespoons of sterile hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution applied as douche for three consecutive days.

This method is said to offer almost ninety percent efficacy in preventing the recurrence of the disease. A modification to this strategy is the addition of povidone iodine to the mix. It involves the use of three percent hydrogen peroxide with fifteen percent salt solution and mixed with ten percent povidone iodine.

This entails daily douching with the solution for ten days and wiping the walls of the reproductive tract with a sterile gauze. If done correctly, the second douching method is reputed to be more effective than drugs, successfully treating those with recurrent disease which have not been cured by drugs.

The funny thing about douching is that it is both a cause and a cure of bacterial vaginosis. Before trying the method out, be sure to read more about it first.
