subject: Careertunity.com Survey Report [print this page]

Careertunity.com conducted an opinion poll among a select 400 of its members. The UAE presents a work environment which is full of challenges yet interesting: thus expressed our respondents. Conducted in April, this survey presents a fresh perspective of working life in the UAE.

42% of the recipients find their current work environment challenging while 25% term their jobs as enjoyable. These positive feelings are backed by reality as evident from their expectations of salary increases: 41% of the employees state that their salary status is likely to remain same, 34% are expecting an increase and 22% are not sure about their salary increase.

For jobseekers, it was found that 41% preferred direct recruitment with 38% preferring to route their candidature via a recruitment agency. Online portals are rapidly increasing in popularity, with the survey clocking in 151 members who vouched for online recruitment. Online job portals like careertunity.com provide the job seeker the opportunity to touch base with an expansive range of companies via our database. Career fairs were the lowest ranked option, with just 7% opting for this route.

Do companies limit their employee profile to specific nationalities? 57% of the poll takers feel that Arabs (including Arab nationals as well as Emiratis) are the most sought after. This highlights the importance of having knowledge of the Arabic language, which is essential if one wishes to survive in the Middle East job market. Asian employees are also sought after due to their expertise and their ability to adapt to any working environment.

With the current economy struggling to steady itself, an overwhelming 358 of the 400 respondents claimed that they were on the lookout for a
new job. Unstable work conditions and the constant search for newer, greener pastures contribute to this large number.

Only 25% agreed that they were happy in their current jobs; this brings to light the need for effective employee satisfaction programs, which are essential in building up a motivated and performance oriented workforce.
