subject: Data Remains In Pst 2007 Version Even After Moving Data To The Earlier Version [print this page]

Working with MS Outlook email client is very easy; however dealing with certain technical issues can leave you in no mans land. As we know very well that MS Outlook 2007 is the improved version of MS Outlook and has been integrated with several features. The 2007 version supports the PST files created using the earlier versions of MS Outlook but the earlier version at times pose troubles for users when they do something vice-versa.

Understanding this condition with a real-time example, suppose you open a Personal Folders file i.e. PST file in MS Office Outlook 2007. After this you move this PST file to an earlier version of MS Outlook. In this situation, MS Outlook item data that is in MS Outlook 2007 still remains in the PST file. The data might comprise properties of the messages and first 256 bytes of the message bodies.

Suppose that you delete an item that is contained in the PST file in the earlier version of MS Outlook, the entry for the item is not completely deleted. Now when you try cleaning the contents of the PST file by compacting the file, the properties that were present in the PST file when you access the file with MS Outlook 2007 stay behind. It is important to note here that a user wont be able to see this behavior in MS Outlook and therefore, to experience this behavior, user must open the PST file in a hexadecimal editor.

This issue is a result of Outlook 2007 trying to write indexing information into the PST file. This information cannot be reconciled by earlier versions of MS Outlook since the indexing information is a part of a new feature set that is integrated in MS Outlook 2007 version. The indexing information is not recognized by earlier versions of MS Outlook.

In order to resolve this issue, we suggest you not to open a PST file that has been opened in MS Outlook 2007 in an earlier version of MS Outlook. When you use this resolution, you can help prevent potential privacy concerns with your Outlook items. If you come across this issue, move the file back to MS Outlook 2007 so that the indexing information can be synchronized.

MS Outlook 2007 PST file comprises indexing information that expands over envelope data about each Outlook item. It is important to understand here that when a user moves PST file from Outlook 2007 to an earlier version of MS Outlook, the envelope information will no longer be updated. If any Outlook item is deleted or modified, the items original envelope information remains unaltered in the PST file. This behavior continues only with the items envelope information which is saved in the PST file, such as the Subject line, the timestamp information and the To and From information.

Any items that were in the envelope information when you opened the PST file in MS Outlook 2007 will remain in the PST file until you move the file back into Outlook 2007. At this point, the PST resolution code in Outlook 2007 will resynchronize the envelope details and the index with the current state of the PST file.

Although, if the PST corrupts due to the above mentioned reasons, its always better to fix Outlook using a professional fix Outlook software. These third party fix Outlook software are devised to resolve corruption or damage issues and ensure that the outlook data remains intact.
