subject: At What Point Does Alcohol Abuse Begin? [print this page]

Alcohol abuse starts when someone takes a drink of alcohol and continues to drink. There really is no valid reason to drink alcohol, and since there is a difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse, anyone who is drinking could be considered abusing alcohol. Alcohol dependency happens when the body, mind and spirit of a person begins to rely on the alcohol in order to avoid unpleasant side effects. Alcohol abuse is anytime someone is drinking for no valid reason.

Teens, and even pre-teens are often lured into drinking. In fact, that is the most rapidly rising age group for drug and alcohol abuse. Every year the amount of teens that begin abusing alcohol rises. Parents who suspect a problem should not wait to get treatment. Many of these teenagers grow up to be alcoholics. Alcohol abuse can soon turn to alcohol dependency and addiction. It doesn't matter if the mind becomes addicted to the alcohol first or if the body does, the result is the same; alcoholism.

Anyone who has consumed alcohol simply to be one of the crowd, or to relieve stress should consider getting rehabilitation. Alcohol is not a harmless substance. The first step would be to remove the alcohol from the system. Then, at a reputable rehabilitation center, the person who is an alcohol abuser learns to cope and live life without the use of alcohol.

Seeking help from a reliable rehabilitation center is advised to help stop alcohol abuse. They are well trained in the effects of alcohol and the best methods of treating alcohol abuse. If it is a teenager who is abusing alcohol, remember that the best time to treat it is before they become addicted to it. Alcohol abuse is running rampant among teens and pre-teens. The numbers grow each year. Many of these young people will end up being full fledged alcoholics by the time they are grown.

No one begins drinking with the hopes of becoming dependent on alcohol, but it happens very often. It starts quickly and can be difficult to change. The best way to prevent alcohol abuse is not to drink; period. This simple act could prevent so much heartache worldwide every year.
