subject: Are You Playing On Your Old Pair Of Nike? [print this page]

IF YOU are an athlete or even a regular jogger who loves to jog on a sports ground take a closer look at the sports floor you are jogging on because it might be the old pair of shoes that you threw away with a gulp of guilt!

Yes, Nike has launched an eco-friendly programme called Reuse-A-Shoe. You can now simply drop your used athletic shoes of any make in the nearby Nike drop off location and they reuse your shoe in their own way!

No hard feelings! I know you will feel guilty with a tinge of pain when you see your old pal-shoe crushed, crumpled and grinded to pasty popcorn but cmon we are in the eco-friendly era! We need some recycling to be done to clean up our earth.

And Nike took a good initiative. The old pairs of shoes that you drop off in the Nike outlets are taken away and made in to a foamy, rubbery pop corn like material called Nike Grind. This material can be used in all kind of things starting from apparel trims, snaps, buttons to zipper pulls all are made from 50 per cent to 100 per cent Nike Grind material.

The Nike Grind is also used in manufacture of sport surfaces such as basketball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds, running tracks and much more. Amazingly, you need 2,500 pairs of shoes to be grinded to coat a basketball court floor. And a running track might need 75,000 pairs of shoes.

Apart from the Nike Grind, other materials that are wasted in the manufacturing process, like the outsole rubber, is also recycled and reintroduced into the manufacturing cycle to make more outsoles. This sometimes used even to make the Nike Grind.

So, why not be a part of the Nikes Reuse-A-Shoe programme? Find your nearest Nike drop odd centre and drop your old Nikes to join the eco race.
