Electric superchargers & Turbos are a widely available modification which allows people to make their engines more powerful. They are reported to make an engine more powerful and increase its' horsepower. This results in smoother and more responsive acceleration as well as an increase in overall speed.

A mix of air and fuel are ignited inside a closed space called the combustion chamber within an engine. This creates a small explosion which moves a piston head because the pressure inside the chamber increases. This piston turns a drive shaft as it moves downwards. Increasing the amount of air in the combustion chamber is an easy way to gain more power from an engine.

The explosion size will increase with the more air that is put into the closed space. The larger this explosion the more horsepower will be available because more energy is available to move the piston. Cooler is better at igniting than hot air, so the temperature is also important to getting more power.

A fan within superchargers and turbos work by using forced induction, they compress air allowing more of it to be forced into the combustion chamber. Air also gets cooler as it is compressed because it does not get heated up by the engine as much as it moves quicker. The fans in the devices are powered by different means, this is what makes them different.

Belts or chains which are attached to a wheel or gear on the drive shaft are how traditional superchargers are powered. Power from the car battery is how electric superchargers power their fan in order to compress the air. A valve controlling the amount of air to the engine has to be fully open to get the best effect form the super charger, this is why they work best on full throttle.

The advantages of an electric supercharger over a traditional one is that they are simple to install and a lot cheaper. They simple attach on to the current air intake system of the engine and a power cable is attached to the engine. Although belt driven chargers provide more power gains an electric charger is still said to give an average 8.5% increase in power.

A fan compressing air is also how turbos work, they however get driven by the exhaust gases of an engine rather than by the engine itself. The exhaust system has a turbine installed in it which drives the compressing fan. These are said to be more efficient because they only use waste energy from the engine to power them rather than using useful energy produced from the drive shaft.

Electric superchargers & Turbos are one of the best ways to increase the power from an engine. By increasing the air flow into the combustion chamber they can increase the explosion creating more energy on the piston head. This is in turn means more horsepower which goes to the wheels hence making the car more powerful.
