subject: Starcraft 2 Protoss Strategy: Dark Templar Rush [print this page]

If you're using the Protoss, the Dark Templar Rush can be a very powerful and effective Protoss strategy. The typical build order for the Dark Templar Rush is as follows:

* 10Pylon

* 12 Gateway

* 14 Assimilator

* 17 Pylon

* 16 Cybernetics Core

* 20 Assimilator+++

* 20 Stalker (optional)

* 20 Twilight Council

* 22 Pylon

* 22 Gateway

* 24 Dark Shrine

* 24 Gateway

* 24 Warpgate Research

This build order is only recommendation. You may need to adjust your build order depending on how aggressive you opponent is or to something you feel comfortable with.

Build a pylon with your second probe to be produced at the nexus. Use that same probe to scout the enemy and harass workers with Zealots. The goal of this Protoss Strategy is to put a strangle hold on your opponents resources.This is a must in order to properly execute the Dark Templar Rush.

Chrono boost immediately on the nexus and micro your harass probe. Your goal here is to build as many buildings as your resources allow. You also want to keep harassing your opponent which requires a good bit of micromanagement. If possible, build a pylon at your opponents natural expansion to prevent any units from escaping. Also prepare yourself for a reaper/zealot rush which will inevitably happen. Build a proxy pylon near your opponents base, but keep it HIDDEN and do not use.

Once you've scouted your opponent and have disguised a proxy pylon, you'll want to create a choke point at your base's entrance. Place a zealot at the entrance and hold position to stop any front door rushes. You may also want to the zealots up front with a few stalkers for good measure. This Protoss strategy stops your opponent from attacking you in numbers. Because of this bottleneck, they're forced to send in attackers one at a time giving you the advantage. Now your ready to attack. Once you get dark templar (3 warp gates) warp them in at your proxy pylon in the enemy base. You'll want to attack opponents resource train first. If your opponent discovers what you're doing he'll probably tech so that he can detect your DTs. If he adapts to your DT strategy change your build to match up with his. Don't continue to build DTs if this happens. It's a recipe for disaster. Then mass zealots and push the front door. This strategy keeps the pressure on and insures your enemy can't leave his base.

Get 2-3 more warp gates so you can mass later. If there are destructible terrain entrances to your base build a pylon. Don't attack his army with the DTs, go for the buildings. If your opponent has overseers or scan sweep don't try to force your way into his base. If you find out he has one of these two, stop building DTs and use another build, again be flexible. Try getting a warp prism to drop the DTs behind your opponents base. The Dark Templar Rush can be a very effective Protoss strategy if correctly executed, but be prepared, if your opponent is prepared for the Dark Templar Rush attack this Protoss strategy will be extremely difficult to use and you should probably abandon it for something else.
