subject: Career Planning: How to Choose Your Future Career [print this page]

Choosing one's career is a very important and quite difficult process. Hypothetically, this is done once in one's life right after graduation from school or even earlier. Though, one can change career for several times in one's life. Is it inappropriate? No. It is possible and sometimes necessary. But the most difficult choice is to be made in one's youth, when he/she does not possess life experience. For young people it is necessary to talk to one's relatives and friends and seek for tips on the internet. Here are some tips to help you to make up your mind. Define Who You Are and What You Want. The most important in career planning is to understand what you want in your life and what kind of person you are. Here you should be very attentive, precise and honest. You should write down your main features of character (active/passive, sociable/shy, etc.). Then write down what you want to do (work with people/animals/equipment, travel/work in an office, work in team/on your own, etc.). Make a list. All these criteria will help you to define the area where you would like to start and develop your career. Define Your Future Career. After you made your mind about what you can and want to do in your life you can choose the field where you would like to work (medicine, design, law, science, education, agriculture, etc.). After deciding that, you should concentrate on specific career which can fit your abilities and life expectations. How to do it? For example, you decided to devote your life to medicine. You can be a doctor, a nurse, chemist, etc. Search information about all these careers. You can also talk to people (parents, relatives, and friends) who are engaged in this sphere. After this you can start preparing for your future: search for information about the education or training, search for employers' demands, etc. When you do all this you will be ready to decide what career is the best for you and what to do to become a professional.
